The transfer (spread) of a disease or infection from person to person. HIV is spread mainly by having sex or sharing injection drug equipment, such as needles, with someone who has HIV. HIV can also be transmitted from a pregnant woman to her child during pregnancy, labor or delivery, or breastfeeding. HIV medicines reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission.
